It’s often thought that once summer is over, all those dresses you wore will no longer see the light of day until next spring. But I’ve always thought that there’s no need to put away something you enjoy wearing (assuming you like to wear dresses of course) just because it’s not in season. There are usually ways to tweak the way you style an item to make it just as weather-appropriate for any month of the year. This is definitely true for dresses. So here are 3 ways to warm up your dresses to give you some ideas for the cooler months.
Wear It with a Scarf
Scarfs are a great accessory this time of year. They’re a great way to make your outfit more interesting by adding pattern/color and/or texture and they make you warmer. They work especially well with a dress because that’s definitely an item that can use some extra warmth.
If it speaks to you, I’m wearing:
Velvet dress, similar here, here and here
Metallic scarf, similar here, here and here
Grey boots, similar here, here and here
Tie a Long Sleeve Button-Down Over It
These work pretty much in the same way that a scarf does. They add pattern/color and/or texture and let’s not forget that they make you warmer. This is a more feminine way to wear a long sleeve button-down since it emphasizes your waist and just generally looks neater (not that wearing the shirt loose doesn’t work, it just gives off a different vibe).
If it speaks to you, I’m wearing:
Black dress, similar here, here and here
Button-down shirt, similar here, here and here
Neutral necklace, similar here, here and here
Beige boots, similar here, here and here
With a Fuzzy Blazer/Cardigan/Jacket
A summer dress might have that balmy-weather vibe and a great way to counteract that (and feel toasty in the process) is by wearing it with a fuzzy blazer, cardigan or jacket on top. Incidentally, this is also a great way to add some texture to your outfit.
If it speaks to you, I’m wearing:
Floral dress, similar here, here and here
Fuzzy cardigan, similar here, here and here
Black boots, similar here, here and here
Thank you for reading. Be kind. Be you.

December 5, 2018 at 9:52 pmI always get sad that I can’t wear some of my favorite dresses once it gets cold out, so this was really helpful! I usually layer a shirt underneath but I really love the look of tying a button-down shirt on top of the dress. A fuzzy cardigan is a great option too!
